Collection Description
The Jackson State University Art Collection houses an expansive selection of exceptional artwork ranging from paintings to sculptures. In 1949, Lawrence Jones founded the Art Department in Johnson Hall. Jones began to exhibit and acquire historically important paintings. Prominent African American artists such as Lawrence Jones, Hale Woodruff, and Frederick Flemister have contributed vivid and dynamic works to the collection.
