The School of Social Work provides educational opportunities for a diverse group of students to earn degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students learn the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics of the profession of social work in a supportive academic environment.

Immunization Requirements

Immunization Requirements

All students admitted to Jackson State University are required to submit proof of having received two immunization shots for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) in order to complete registration for classes. If an applicant has already been admitted and plans to attend the University as a first-time student (undergraduate, graduate, or transfer), he/she must submit a copy of the required immunization record to the University Health Center prior to registration for courses. Students who have been admitted but do not submit the required immunization verification will be unable to complete registration for classes in the school’s computer enrollment system. Institutional Financial Aid

The Division of Graduate Studies awards assistantships each year with a monthly stipend plus tuition for one academic year—Fall and Spring. To qualify for an assistantship the applicant must have at least a 3.00 average on a 4.00 scale, be able to carry at least 9 semester hours of course work each semester, and be able to contribute 12 hours for master-level student or 15 hours for a doctoral level student of useful service weekly to a department or academic college. Applications may be obtained from the Division of Graduate Studies. Students should apply directly to the department chair or academic dean of the desired major field. The deadline for submitting applications is March 1.

The School of Social Work Program seeks to prepare students to become leaders in enhancing the quality of life and seeking solutions to social problems. It is particularly concerned with the consequences of injustice, and thus focuses on the empowerment of at-risk populations and the advancement of social, economic, and political justice in all communities. The program is especially committed to increasing students’ understanding and appreciation of diverse life experiences.

While guiding both traditional and nontraditional students from varied backgrounds toward professional careers in social work, the program seeks to provide special support and sensitivity to students with the potential for success in this field.
