The logos for the Margaret Walker Center, Jackson State University, and MS Humanities Council are along the bottom, to the left of a headshot of a smiling man in a black suit and red tie and glasses with a white background behind him. The text advertises the MLK Convocation and labels the photo as Charles Payne, Keynote Speaker.

Our 57th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday Convocation will take place at 10:00 a.m. on January 17 in the Rose E. McCoy Auditorium. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Charles M. Payne, whose classic book I’ve Got the Light of Freedom: The Organizing Tradition and the Mississippi Freedom Struggle will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. There also will be a poetry reading, moving performances from the JSU Music Department, and several guest speakers.

Our For My People Awards luncheon will be held at noon in the JSU Student Center Ballroom A on Friday, January 17, following the convocation. Join us as we honor Dr. Charles Payne, Attorney Carroll Rhodes, and Rev. Dr. C.J. Rhodes with For My People awards and hear from important scholars and Jackson State student leaders. Tickets to purchase a meal are $25 and are available to purchase online on JSU Marketplace. Students may register for free. Limited seating will be available for those who do not wish to purchase lunch.

In addition, don’t forget to about our special Reflections on the Mississippi Movement event taking place at the COFO Civil Rights Education Center on January 16, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
