This transition can be challenging for some, but with the right mindset and communication, it can lead to a positive and rewarding experience. Housing & Residential Life at JSU is here to offer some helpful tips to ensure your new living arrangement is comfortable, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
The Benefits of Less Roommate Conflict:

How to Minimize Conflict When Living with a Roommate
1. Discuss and Learn Each Other’s Schedules
Understanding your roommate’s daily routine is essential. Know when they have class, study sessions, or quiet time, so you can respect their space and activities. For example, if your roommate has early morning classes, avoid noisy study sessions late at night. Instead, consider using one of JSU’s many quiet study spaces, like the library or study lounges, to get your work done without disturbing your roommate.
2. Clean Up After Yourself
One of the most common sources of roommate conflict is cleanliness. Remember, your roommate is not responsible for your mess, and vice versa. Make it a habit to pick up your clothes, keep shared spaces tidy, and avoid leaving dirty dishes lying around. It may also help to agree on a weekly cleaning schedule, where each of you takes responsibility for certain tasks, ensuring that your living space remains organized and pleasant.
3. Be Honest and Open with Your Roommate
Effective communication is key to any successful roommate relationship. If something bothers you or makes you uncomfortable, it’s best to address it early on. Your roommate may not realize that their behavior is affecting you, and most likely, they will appreciate the opportunity to make changes. Likewise, if your roommate brings an issue to you, listen respectfully and be willing to compromise. If the conflict becomes too difficult to resolve on your own, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Community Assistant (CA) for assistance. They are there to help mediate and find solutions.
4. Complete Your Roommate Agreement with Your CA & Roommate(s)
At the beginning of your time on campus, it’s important to complete a Roommate Agreement with your CA and your roommate(s). This agreement allows you to openly discuss expectations, concerns, and boundaries regarding your shared living space. Topics to discuss may include cleaning responsibilities, quiet hours, guest policies, and other personal preferences. Having this conversation early can help avoid misunderstandings and set the stage for a respectful and cooperative living environment. If any issues arise later on, you and your CA can refer back to the agreement to help resolve conflicts.
By following these simple guidelines and maintaining open communication, you can create a more harmonious living environment at Jackson State University, allowing you to focus on your academics, build meaningful relationships, and enjoy your time on campus.
