The Department of Art provides students with a critical understanding of art, professional training in a range of artistic methods, opportunities to view traditional and contemporary modes of visual expression, and the chance to participate in competitive and professional activities.
Studio Art
The Studio Art concentration provides professional training in the visual arts for students working across a variety of media. The program is also attractive to those students who are scholars of the arts, and who have interests that include art history and criticism. Study in this area begins with a thorough art and design foundation that includes color design classes and four semesters of drawing. Students also take four core courses in art history, and an introductory class for each concentration area.
Advanced students take multiple courses in an area of concentration. Current areas of concentration include Painting, Ceramics, Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. At least four semesters of applied coursework in the area of concentration is required, and a selection of capstone classes including the Senior Exhibition complete the program.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Students who graduate from this program of study are able to work across a range of media, and are especially adept at the creative process within their chosen concentration. They are well grounded in history and theory, and have had many experiences and opportunities that enable them to practice art. With resources including multiple computer suites, a dark room, an expansive permanent collection and professional art gallery, the Department of Art offers students an opportunity to gain professional experience throughout their undergraduate degree.
