Golden Class of 1972

Participation in Graduate Student Commencement [Friday, April 29, 2022]

Congratulations! This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1972 at Jackson State University. As a golden graduate, you are cordially invited to join your fellow classmates to celebrate your “50th Anniversary,” and receive your golden diploma from Mr. Thomas K. Hudson, J.D., the 12th president of Jackson State University.  The JSU Graduate Commencement for graduate students and golden diploma recipients will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. at the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center.

Our distinguished co-chair for the Class of 1972 is Mr. Henry Stovall. He is working with the Department of Alumni and Constituency Relations and class members to spread the word about the 50th Anniversary activities this year.  Currently, reunion activities include the following for the Class of 1972: 1) Participation in JSU’s Spring Commencement to receive your golden diploma from President Hudson; and 2) Participation in Reunion Weekend during the week of Homecoming in which all Class of 1972 graduates will be inducted into “The Society of Golden Tigers,” during the “Golden Tigers Jazz Brunch”. All alumni who graduated from classes ending in 2’s and 7’s will also be invited this year to attend the “Golden Tigers Jazz Brunch” at a minimum cost to express their appreciation to the Golden Class of 1972 for so valiantly helping to pave the way. Endowed Scholarship

The Golden Class of 1972 plans to give a gift of $100,000 for an endowed scholarship.   Once fully endowed, the scholarship will exist in perpetuity, ensuring the legacy of the Class of 1972 and its commitment to Jackson State University for generations to come.  Two scholarships will be awarded annually.  The scholarship will be announced at the Society of Golden Tigers Brunch on Friday, October 21, 2022, and the $100,000 check will be presented to President Thomas K. Hudson at half-time during the homecoming game.

We need all of your support to reach our goal.  We are asking each classmate to give a minimum of $500 toward our scholarship whether you attend the graduation ceremony or homecoming.  We have developed multiple giving levels with benefits, allowing classmates to give at their comfort or stretch level (see attachment).  Of course, any donation is appreciated.  For your convenience, you may give in installments.  The deadline for endowment giving is October 8, 2022.

Meet & Greet/Memorial Service

We will enjoy a Meet & Greet opening reception that will include a memorial service on Thursday, April 28, at 5P.  Join your classmates at the Downtown Campus located at 101 West Capitol Street, Jackson, MS 39201.  The gathering will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, a memorial service honoring our deceased classmates, the singing of Jackson Fair, and a video presentation of the first Memorial Bench ever placed on the main campus by an alumni class.  $20 per class member, includes one (1) guest.  $20 for each additional guest. $10 for a child.

Memorial Bench

The 1972 Golden Class Planning Committee made the decision, on behalf of the class, to dedicate a Memorial Bench in honor of the deceased members of the Class of 1972 to be placed on campus.  This will be the first Bench ever placed on the campus by an alumni class.  The bench will be in the Legacy Garden located across from the New Student Center next to the Administration Tower building and near the Circle of Flags.  The cost is $5,000 that goes to the University.  We respectfully request each member to support the cost of this tribute through a contribution of $50.
